2007 Formula Hybrid Competition
Thayer's Inaugural Formula Hybrid Event was held at New Hampshire's Loudon International Speedway May 1-3, 2007 and was a great success.
Out on the raceway the competitive spirit was alive and well, with all teams competing in all of the events. In the endurance event, McGill and Florida Institute of Technology completed the full 22km. According to Steve Daum of the SAE, the 33% endurance finish rate is very respectable for a first-year competition, especially one involving vehicles that incorporate complex hybrid, mechanical, and electrical drive systems. The final results: McGill placed first, Embry-Riddle second, and Yale third. See 2007 Formula Hybrid Results for further information.
With the kind of engineering challenges Formula Hybrid poses, there was much discussion among the six teams, creating a dynamic engineering environment. Based on the flow of ideas, we anticipate seeing even more innovative hybrid cars in 2008.
The Formula Hybrid Competition attracted significant media attention. ABC-Channel 5 Boston ran a story on the event as part of their 5:00 newscast, and NBC-Burlington ran a segment on Dartmouth's hybrid car. Several local newspapers—and one international paper—covered the event. For more, see In the News.
We look forward to doubling the field for the 2008 Formula Hybrid Competition! See you there!
